BASIC GOBBLEDYGOO ARITHMETIC
All Goobledygoo Arithmetic is as easy as the basic arithmetic functions of adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing. The extra elements of mystery, creativity, entertaining and fundraising are introduced. There is an emphasis on improving mental arithmetic, minimising the use of calculators.
Number blocks are for calculations, and for jumbling and unjumbling in the most mysterious ways, and practice improves speed, beating the adult with an electronic calculator.
This website aims to demonstrate what can be done with Gobbledygoo Arithmetic. At this stage the methods will remain secret, challenging teachers to please explain how the results are achieved. This arithmetic is intended for The Smart State Movie "Day For Daniel" as the arithmetic is designed as therapy for those adversely affected by persons missing.
There is encouragement to discover and use patterns in words and numbers creatively. For example
Day has 3 letters, Daniel has 6 and For has 3. The number 363 can stand for the title of the movie, or The Number Six, or The Little One, or The Absent one.
Notice the grid used for Goobledygoo Arithmetic consists of 4 rows of 11. Notice 3 rows of 11 form the question and one row of 11 is the answer. Notice 11 times 33 = 363.
Starting with an empty grid, the default number in the middle of the first line is 363, and zero is used as the default start of the next three lines. As you place the default 363, think about someone you are missing and focus on his or her birthdate. The Number 363 could stand for The Absent One.
As you place the three zeros, think of Triple O, OOO the emergency services number in Australia. Think of Mrs Noughtfear the Number None, or Nun. Three Nones equalling one Nun, the one who is going to hide The Absent One from you and frustrate you with Gobbledygoo. Think of Gobbledygoo as personal or bureaucratic obstacles that aim to continue hiding The Absent One from you.
As your frustration continues you become so angry you turn into Nineapple Pineapple, the Number Nine in Queensland, the Smart Disabled and cheeky pineapple who knows how to find The Bad Threes hiding in the Pear Trees singing with The Six behind the wall of bricks. The Absent One, 363 is hidden and you are going to smash through the wall of bricks.
Now calm down and let's look at the situation mathematically and symbolically. We have the grid with 363 and 000. Now imagine I am Doctor Gobbledygoo, Number Therapist. Before you provide the birthdate, I will tell you I am thinking of the eighth day of the month and place an 8 beside the frst zero on the second line.
You think of the 19th day and place 1 and 9 as first digits on first line. I think of January and place 0 and 1 as my next 2 digits. You think of December and place 1 and 2 as your next digits. You have crated your Good number before your Bye number 363. I think of the year 1938 and place 3 and 8 as my next 2 digits creating my Smart number 10838 beside 0. You think of the year 1989 and place these 4 digits as your Blog number. You have completed your fist line.
Notice I chose my day, month and year numbers before you chose yours? Now I cover my Smart Number and a Gobbledygoo student looks at your Good, Bye and Blog numbers and creates a State number 10621 just like that. Now I cover the Smart and State numbers and another student looks at your GoodByeBlog and creates a Queensland number beside the zero on the third line.
Now the 6 numbers need to be added to form the answer beside the zero on the last line, completing 33 digits in the question and 11 in the answer. You can use a calculator, the students may beat you with mental arithmetic.
Now you jumble the 33 digits in the question and a child who has no knowledge of them has to quickly unjumble them by looking at the answer. The mystery is how could this be done just from the answer? The child has no knowledge of the dates you and I chose, and no knowledge of the other numbers except for 363 and 000.
The Little Wun is missing in Queensland and is nowhere to be found. Have you seen Mollly? Mollly is an unfound unruly unwanted unloving baby found on the train in Queensland. Now she is wanted by the Police for questioning about the disappearance of her siblings.
